Alex de la Croix
Alex de la Croix is a filmmaker, cultural manager and artist. She combines and involves Q + activism with her audiovisual projects, in which she works both in front of and behind the camera, with her work of cultural management and creative direction as well as teaching in the world of fashion. We met up with her at Baldomero, a very cozy cafe in Barcelona and enjoyed a plant-based lunch.
Tell us a little bit about yourself, who is Alex de la Croix?
I think I have answered this question so many times I don’t even know what to say anymore. Sometimes I even forget who I am and what my purpose in life is. Sometimes I think I don’t have any so I question my mere existence. It might sound too deep or emotional but it’s where I’m at right now. I am a human who questions everything but doesn’t understand most of it.
What projects are you working on at the moment?
I’m losing years of life in constructing a feature film. My first one. It’s such a difficult process that I honestly feel I am getting old along the way. Metaphorically speaking, obvs. Also I am preparing future projects such as a series and a couple of shortfilms. Everything is in the way but nothing is complete yet!
What made you decide to change your diet to a plant-based diet? Would you say that changing your diet has affected other aspects of your life?
I don’t accept violence in any form. So why torture and kill animals? When you stop eating animals everything changes. You stop feeling this violence in you, you become calmer and at ease. Anyways this is my perspective. The rest of the world will keep saying animals exist for us to kill them.
We are aware that you are a Queer activist. How do you practice this activism in your daily life?
Just existing and being my true self. Never changing or adapting myself to hostile environments, always showing your reality.
Would you say that with your influence you have been able to reach out and help more people in the LGTBIQ+ community? What would be a piece of advice you would give to the people that look up to you?
This is one of the things that gratifies me the most: knowing that thanks to my words or my actions some people might feel they are not alone and encouraged to keep on. I grew up with LGTB referents but when I grew older I realized they were mostly wrong. Queer people perception in the media has been basically transphobic and parodical and that’s not where I want to reflect myself. So seeing that I could be the referent I never had to others makes me so happy. Advice: never believe what they tell you. Always analyze it and see it from different perceptions before you decide to own it.

Who and what inspires you?
I guess you want me to name somebody here, so I’ll say I have been very inspired lately by Wong Kar Wai films.
How do you think fashion allows you to express your identity? Do you think fashion can also be something that pigeonholes you and doesn't allow you to express yourself freely?
Without fashion we wouldn’t be absolutely anything. That’s how I see it. (Unluckily) we can’t go naked to the streets so what we choose as an outfit really defines how we think and how we act. Most people say they aren’t influenced by fashion so they wear whatever but that ‘whatever’ comes from some level of fashion history and has been designed and made for them to think they don’t give a f*** about what they wear. But there is so much history behind each garment we use. I care about what I wear and I potentially use fashion to communicate and elaborate a narrative of my own thoughts. Am I too thoughtful then?
What is one milestone of your life you are proud of?
Being able to exist without having to do jobs I don’t want to do. Being independent, not being afraid of what people think, having a nice apartment, being surrounded by amazing people. I couldn’t ask for more.
Where do you see yourself in a few years? What plans/goals do you have in the near future?
I’m focusing on developing a career fully committed to filmmaking. I want to direct, to perform, to produce, to write… which is basically what I do know but this is what I want for my future. I see myself in a country where I’ll never have to experience cold again. I hate the cold.
