M '89 LEATHER
RECYCLED PU FOAM
The leather of our sneakers comes from our Portuguese supplier, who acquires it mainly from European cows. Our leather is environmentally certified, which means that environmental standards and stewardship procedures are granted in our supply chain, from primary manufacturer to final product.
Back when we started SAYE’s adventure, we realized that leather is a sub-product derived from the meat industry and ends up in landfills if it’s not treated correctly. As the industry continues to generate such waste, we continue to offer a few models from our leather-based original collection in this material.
As of the beginning of 2020, we have begun to explore the use of vegan or bio-based materials that you can check out in our other collections.
The use of genuine leather in this collection shows its exception properties in terms of breathability, durability and comfort. The material has given us great design possibilities and we continue to be challenged by how to handle this readily available waste.
And the good news is that we are continuing to test new recycled and plant-based materials to introduce them in our product line in the near future.
LINING & LACES
We use certified organic cotton for the laces. This material fulfills the requirements on the highest quality organic fibers promoted by certificates on respectful ecological and social standards.
Organic cotton is beneficial for our environment and our health because it is grown in fertile land fields free of harmful pesticides, herbicides and synthetic chemical fertilizers. In addition, it is spun and produced without using toxic chemicals. Organic agriculture respects the cycles of soil, trying to maintain a balance which will preserve the land for future uses.
By using a certified organic product on our sneakers, we are getting both socially and environmentally committed, we are betting on a slightly cleaner and safer world, and we are helping the planet and future generations.
NATURAL & SYNTHETIC RUBBER
Our outsole is made in Portugal. It is composed of 30% natural rubber and 70% synthetic rubber.
Both natural and synthetic rubber have been tested to have high tear resistance, elasticity at low temperatures, and high tensile strength. This mix allows maximum performance and comfort.
RECYCLED PU FOAM
We recover polyurethane PU leftovers from European automotive factories that otherwise would become waste, and we transform them into brand new insoles made of 60% recycled PU and 40% virgin PU.
Our insole is designed and developed in perfect harmony with the environment, without compromising excellent physical and mechanical properties. Its key component is carbon, a plant-based substance with absorbing and desorption properties, and also breathability, easing the elimination of moisture, thermal sensation and unwanted odors.
The counter and the puff of the sneakers are invisible stiff reinforcement pieces located between the lining and the upper that help maintain the shape of the shoe. The counter helps strengthen the rear of the shoe and the puff helps the toe cap.
We recycle thermoplastic leftover plates and transform them into new puffs and counters, adding to this mixture up to 35% of wood chips we recover from the carpentry industry.
BOX & PAPER
We use 100% recycled boxes and paper manufactured in Portugal in compliance with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) certifications.
When timber leaves an FSC or PEFC certified forest, we ensure companies along the supply chain meet our best practice standards. So when a product bears the FSC or PEFC logo, you can be sure it comes from responsible and sustainable sources. In this way, both certifications help forests remain thriving environments for generations to come, at the same time that help yourself make ethical and responsible choices when buying any product.
PLASTIC FREE & FULLY BIODEGRADABLE
Packaging is the leading contributor to pollution, especially in marine environments. Petroleum-based plastics only exacerbate this pollution problem and have a deep impact on the environment and wildlife.
In an effort to reduce our environmental impact, we've decided to avoid plastic bags. Instead, we use biodegradable mailer bags made from cornstarch. When exposed to light, air, moisture and microbes, our bio-bags break down to natural elements that are found in nature.
Plastic-free packaging, while laborious to produce, is a step towards the right direction to minimize the amount of petroleum-based plastics that end up in landfills and nature.
