There’s one subject that’s been on the tip of everyone’s tongue lately, before coronavirus stuck it’s nosey head in, and that is - Sustainability.

Sustainable living, the impact we are having on the environment and climate change are fast becoming the most significant talking points of the 21st century. What, why and how we can make a difference needs to be our focus, perhaps now more than ever before.

It’s important to explain, before we dive in, that there are hundreds, and even thousands of steps you can mindfully take to living a more sustainable lifestyle. It can seem overwhelming to begin…

So remember - Every journey, no matter how far, begins with one single step. We need to start somewhere.

And the good thing is, if we all focus on mastering these changes now, we’ll be well on our way to creating a more fruitful footprint and closer to global harmony. So below, we’ve hit on 5 super important (and relatively easy) ways that you can cultivate the sort of sustainable lifestyle, that will leave your future self healthy, connected and thriving.

A Little More On Sustainability

The definition of sustainability is pretty straight forward, especially when you apply it’s meaning to our earth and its finite resources. Simply speaking, the way we, as human beings are living, consuming, eating, travelling is not able to be maintained at the current level.

The daily choices we make are destroying the environment, the wildlife and the quality of our Earth. And studies have shown us, time and time again, that Humanity will need to make some drastic changes if we want to continue living a good enough life.

5 Steps To Sustainability

Sustainable living is based on four main pillars, namely, minimising waste, limiting the use of Earth’s natural resources, the wise use of the environment, and ensuring quality working/living environments.

We’ve chosen a category using these 4 pillars and thrown in 1 more for good luck:

Transport - Energy - Food Production - Waste Management - Mindfulness

And to get an even better look at what we need to improve on, we flipped the question on its head! We first compiled some of the most UNsustainable practices being carried out that are harming our environment, and what sustainable choices we can make IMMEDIATELY, to create change.

Driving personal vehicles.

Step Walk, ride your bike, work from home, catch the bus, limit driving.

Driving your personal car is one of the more ‘unsustainable’ practices that most people can immediately alter. Climate scientists say, one of the leading factors for driving global warming higher, is the environmental impact of an automobile.

Have a look at your daily life and choose one single change you can make to your schedule. Find a way to ride your bike, catch the bus or limit your driving miles to create a momentous impact on your environment.

Being wasteful with water.

Treat water like gold.

Conserving water in the house is an easy way to live more sustainably.
Water is a finite commodity which, if not managed properly, will result in shortages in the very near future.

How to save water?

Install water-saving shower heads or flow restrictors.
Always use full loads in your washing machine and dishwasher.
Take a shorter shower.
Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth.

Food production and transport.

Order a weekly box of delicious produce from your local organic farm.

Sustainable farming is one of the vital principles of sustainable living.
Supporting your local farm encourages the availability of healthy, local, organic, low impact, and seasonal food. Food wastage is also highly discouraged in an organic farm environment.

It’s absolutely paramount that we support our farmers and buy the sort of in season produce, that will automatically strengthen our immunity, sense of community and cause less pollution, while limiting transport costs.

Being wasteful.

Setup a recycling system.

General waste has a huge negative impact on the natural environment and recycling helps to reduce pollution and harmful chemicals that are released. Recycling also reduces the need for raw materials so that rainforests can be preserved.

There are a thousand and one incredible ways of reusing and recycling anything and everything. Get creative when thinking of ways to repurpose items, each time you buy. But first things first, set up a recycling system at your work and home. Make sure glass, plastic, paper and organic products all are thrown away into their respective places.

Recycle: plastic packaging, glass, paper, old clothes, old furniture.
Reuse: plastic packaging, bottles, and cups for other purposes, re-use gift wrapping paper.

Unconscious consuming.

Consume mindfully, Think before you buy.

We live in a society built on consumerism. And the mentality that has been created as a by-product of that is to buy, buy, buy. The time has come to consume mindfully, to think before you buy.

Research into the production practices behind your favourite brands and companies. Reach out to them and ask what they are doing to support change and positively impact the environment.

If you feel you’ve already nailed these 5 steps on sustainability, and are looking to ramp up your consciousness and eco-footprint, check out these 100 top tips here.

From your personal health, to strengthening the well-being of your community and supporting the environment, the benefits of living a more sustainable lifestyle is truly an endless list of positives.

The most important advice for living more sustainably is simply this, ASK QUESTIONS. Asking the difficult questions and you’ll begin to see the change. Ask questions to the brands you love, the companies you give money to the politicians you vote for.

Ask questions, gain more knowledge, gain more awareness. The more you know, the more you can decide and act from an educated standpoint. And the more positive choices and impact you create.

It’s true, the information can be overwhelming. There’s no doubt about it.

And the further you wade into the debate, the quicker you can feel like you’re on a never-ending roller coaster ride of contradictions and emotions.
But remember, we are one huge, global team. And everyone, and we mean every single team member, can and needs to take responsibility for their role.

This is a journey we are all on, and like any journey, there are wrong turns taken and bumpy roads to navigate. We wish you all the best on your sustainability journey and a big thank you from us, for treading lighter and helping protect this beautiful planet of ours.
